Found in San Francisco, Lombard Street is one of the most crooked streets in the world. With eight hairpin turns, it was originally designed to allow cars to travel down the steep grade of the hill. The Lombard Street socks take you down a similar journey. Starting at the cuff, the cables twist and turn, eventually opening out at the toe.

When knitting these socks, keep in mind that the cabling across the top of the sock does not have as much stretch. If you have a favorite needle size to make socks with, consider going up one size.

Materials

• Bay Street Yarns Ava (80% Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Nylon; Fingering weight: 400 yd/336 m per 3.53 oz/100 g skein); color: Garden Party; 1 (2) skeins
• US 1/2.25 mm 32-inch/80-cm long circular needle (for working Magic Loop)
• Stitch marker, cable needle, tapestry needle

Please note: If making the medium size and knitting the foot to the length of a US women’s size 9, you will need only a few more yards/meter over 400yds/336m recommended skein. Otherwise one of the recommended skeins will suffice.

Gauge
30 sts x 44 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in Stockinette stitch, after blocking
