Materials needed:

4 mm circular knitting needles on a 40 cm cord
4 mm dpns
Stitch marker
Tapestry/Yarn needle
Approximately 50 g of Knitting For Olive Heavy Merino (or any worsted weight yarn of your choice)

10 st x 16 rows should = 2x2 inches. (without blocking)

Note this pattern is written in one size for an average head circumference between 22-23. Here are some notes if you are wanting to adjust the size of the hat. According to my testing, I wanted my hat (pre-block) to measure 14.5% less than my actual head circumference (this allows for a snug, well-fitted hat). My head circumference is 22” therefore I wanted my hat to have a circumference of 18.5” at its widest point. My calculations looked as follows:

22 (head circumference) - 14.5% = 18.81 (goal circumference)

I rounded the number down to allow for a more snug fitting hat and settled for an ideal circumference of 18.5”. With my new goal circumference I was able to calculate the necessary cast on stitches knowing that my gauge was hitting at 5 stitches per inch. My calculations for cast on stitches looked as follows.

5 (st per inch) x 18.5” (goal circumference) = 92.5 (cast on stitches)

I shaved off the extra 0.5 st to have a nice even cast on of 92 st. REMEMBER your final cast on sts must be a number divisible by 4 for both the 2x2 rib to be even AND for the decreases to be even. Adjust your final sum by rounding up or down as needed for it to become a number divisible by 4.
