Shawl 2 in the Mythplaced series.

Lothlorien is a lace and mesh semicircular shawl with botanical elements drawn from the work of the phenomenal Herbert Niebling, and evoking echoes of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings description of the woods of Lothlorien, with its floor of golden leaves, and roof of golden boughs laden with yellow flowers.

  • Please note the pattern is charts only after the first 30 rows.
  • The pattern is given in one main size - this can be shortened by one set of leaves, and the edging can be extended to make use of a little extra yardage. Extra wedges can be added to make more than a half circle.
  • The design suits lace to sport weight yarn, of solid, semi solid, or gradient colouring.
  • Yardage will vary with yarn weight. Allow 1400m (1600y) for heavy lace, and more like 2000m for fingering weight. Choose needles to suit your preferred gauge.

Yardage varied widely between testers, with most using under 1400m, and others using up to 2000m, depending on yarn, gauge, etc.

My project page can be found here and shows the smallest size, in a heavy lace weight. It measures 205x100cm (80x40in) after blocking. I used 2 colours (Old Gold for the main and Antique Brass for the edge) to recreate the golden leaves and yellow flowers of the text, but it is written as if worked in a single colour.

A note on depth: rows 125-148 can be omitted to reduce length/yardage. The first 124 rows use approx 25% of the full 266 rows, or 27% if skipping r125-148. The skipped section is roughly equal to the last 5 rows.

This series is a dive into decadent, escapist lace for challenging times. In such times, rest and self-care become doubly important, and my hope is that stepping into a distant world of really engaging lace will help provide a little down time in amidst the madness, for anyone who is feeling a little Mythplaced…
