Notes From the Designer:

What is love? Whether we mean self-love or love for another, how do we define it? Is it our feelings, our actions, or some combination of the two? Is it possible to imbue an object with love or to wrap ourselves in it? Whether you knit this pattern for yourself or as a gift for someone special, these are things to think about as you work. The love might be in the finished object itself, or in the knowledge that this is a gift for or from one person who loves another enough to create for them something beautiful. Perhaps the love created by this gift will be paid forward in ten or twenty or a hundred little ways, like ripples on a pond. Perhaps it will touch one person, and maybe that’s enough. No matter how we define it, love is always around us.

  • Gauge is important to this shawl, as you may run out of yarn if you do not obtain the same gauge as the designer.
  • This pattern is an easy introduction to lace for adventurous beginners or a meditative piece for more experienced knitters. The shawl features a simple two-row repeat that shifts slightly with each color change, but otherwise remains the same throughout the entire piece. If you prefer not to shift the texture, simply omit the second pattern, and continue the first pattern throughout the body. You can also shift the texture more often, if you like. This pattern is yours to adjust as you please.
  • This shawl is worked flat from side to side.
  • The pattern is written for four colors, but you can use as many or as few colors as you like.
  • Eyelet rib shifts occur as colors change, but you can also decide where/how often you want to shift the rib, or whether you want to shift at all. Width can be easily adjusted by casting on more or fewer stitches in a multiple of 8 + 6 (3 for each edge). Length can also be adjusted by working more or fewer repeats in each color.
  • The original version is shown in our limited edition SeaCoast Fingering yarn in discontinued colors: A) Boardwalk, B) Sand Dollar, C) Inlet, and D) Reef. It used one skein of each color for a total of 1662 yards (1520 m).
  • If working with multiple skeins of the same hand-dyed color, remember to alternate skeins every couple of rows to avoid color pooling.
