Designed for the annual 45Fibre event in May 2026 in Gore, Southland, New Zealand, this shawl brings together Amy’s beautiful self‑striping yarn and colourwork motifs inspired by Eastern European heritage.

I’m lucky enough to call two countries home — one in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern — both resting near the 45th parallel. This shawl is a little love letter to both.

Worked top‑down from a garter‑tab start, the shawl grows into a soft, heart‑shaped triangle. Mosaic colourwork keeps things engaging while using only one colour at a time. The design is intentionally written to use 150 g / 600 m in total: 100 g / 400 m for the main colour and 50 g / 200 m for the contrast.

You’ll find two different bind‑off options here, plus a few tips to help you steer clear of any unexpected yarn‑chicken games as you finish your shawl.

This shawl is also part of a special community project: knit yours ahead of the event and bring it along to show off at 45Fibre. Whether you choose stripes, solids, or a mix, every version tells its own story from the 45th parallel.
