THE INSPIRATION

There is something so interesting and romantic about a traditional windmill. These ancient machines have harnessed the power of the wind for centuries, and many are still standing even today. If you look closely, the shaping of the lace in this stitch pattern is reminiscent of the four blades of a vertical windmill, with a beautiful seed stitch diamond representing the base of the structure. Knit flat from the bottom up, this scarf is meant to have an oversized fit as shown in the photos. However, you can easily customize this pattern to suit your own style! See the “Customization” section. By the way, if you can correctly guess the reference in the title from a popular reality TV show, send me an email and I’ll send you a code for a free pattern of your choice!

THE YARN

I was honored to be one of the first designers to use the new yarn from Blue Sky Fibers -- Woolstok North. This beautiful super bulky yarn is made of the highest quality 100% fine highland wool. It’s so soft and squishy; I really enjoyed working with this yarn and am already plotting another project just to have the excuse to knit with it again! There are 12 gorgeous colorways to choose from, from earthy neutrals to bold and bright colors to make your FO a true statement piece.

MATERIALS

  • Approximately 380 yards (347 m) of super bulky (6) yarn, or a little less if you don’t want to make a fringe. I used about 3.5 skeins of Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok North in the colorway “Northern Lights.”

  • US size 15 knitting needles (either straights or circulars)

  • Large cable needle

  • Common notions, such as scissors, measuring tape, wool needle, etc.

MEASUREMENTS

92” (234 cm) long x 9.5” (24 cm) wide -- not including fringe

GAUGE

9.5 sts x 13 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch
