Just in time to make for your Valentine! This classic, simple argyle heart slouchy hat is perfect for your sweetheart of any age. It would make a particularly adorable matching set for parent and child, or a group of siblings. Sizes for toddler through XL adult are included.

The hat is worked from the bottom up, using my “Slim Brim” technique, which produces a very thin ribbed edge. The slim brim allows for a more flexible bottom edge than beginning with a chain or even chainless foundation stitches. The entire argyle heart intarsia band, worked in center single crochet (also known as waistcoat stitch) serves as a wide brim, with the top portion worked in the linen or moss stitch (alternating single crochet and chain spaces) to keep it nice and slouchy.

I have included detailed notes on how the colorwork should be done, as well as charts for both right and left-handed crocheters. An experienced knitter could also work the chart provided as a knit chart, but would need to improvise for the brim and top of the hat.

I have used Lion Brand Heartland for my sample (shown in toddler size,) with the base done in Badlands and the argyle heart motif in Denali. Most medium weight yarns could be substituted, though, as long as gauge is observed.

Before you begin:
-You will need to know how to identify the back bump of your chain stitches to work the slim brim.
-You will need to know how to work “back loop only” stitches. For the purposes of this pattern we will work them around both the back and 3rd loops of the hdc, so you will also need to know how to identify the 3rd loop.

Recommended yarn: Lion Brand Heartland or similar medium (4) weight yarn, 2 colors:
Youth sizes: Allow up to 75 yds (69 m) of main color,
35 yds (32 m) of contrasting color
Adult sizes: Allow up to 95 yds (87 m) of main color,
45 yds (41 m) of contrasting color

Recommended hook size: K (6.50mm) hook, or as needed to meet gauge

Sizing: 4 sizes:
Toddler – 17-19” (43-48 cm) head circumference
Youth – 19-21” (48-53 cm)
Adult S/M – 21-23” (53-58 cm)
