Lucy is a drop shoulder design worked top down, both flat and in the round, with an almost all-over Andalusian stitch texture and a rounded neckline. This listing includes pdfs for both a Cardigan and Sweater version of this design.
The Andalusian stitch is broken up by panels of Stockinette stitch along the shoulder seams, neckline, and underarm. If you would prefer a sweater, there is a second pdf in your download with those instructions along with a modification for a vest. Please note that the Vest version of this pattern was not a part of the test knit.
You will begin by working the back yoke, which is shaped with increases on the right and wrong side of the work to create slanted shoulders. You will also establish the Andalusian stitch texture here.
For the Cardigan version of this pattern, you will then pick up and knit stitches to form the right and left shoulders in turn before joining the body sections together at the underarm. You will then continue to work the length of the body flat.
For the Sweater version of this pattern, you will pick up and knit the left then the right shoulder stitches and join them after the neckline shaping to form the front panel before joining to work the length of the body in the round.
The body is then finished with a split hem, but there is also the option to omit the split. I next recommend that you apply the collar and the button bands, before picking up and knitting stitches to form the sleeves which are worked in the round. The collar, cuffs, and hem are finished with 1x1 rib. There is an additional pdf containing instructions on how to modify your Lucy Cardigan/Sweater to be a vest, if so desired.
Materials and Fit
Notions: You will need 3 mm / US 2.5 (40- and 80- or-100-cm / 16- and 32- or 40-in cord) and 4 mm / US 6 (40-, 60-, and 80- or 100-cm / 40-, 24-, and 32-in cord circular needles. You will also need a darning needle and either scrap yarn, spare circular needles, or stitch holders for the resting stitches. You may find it helpful to use stitch markers to check the length of your work. If making the Lucy Cardigan/Cardigan Vest, you will also need between 6-8 20 mm buttons.
Tension: 20 stitches x 30 rows/rounds in Andalusian stitch on 4 mm / US 6 = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 in.
Please note that Andalusian stitch can change quite dramatically with wet blocking, especially with the types of yarn I recommend for this pattern. If you have access to a steamer, you may find it helpful to steam block your work as you go to check that your tension is accurate. I found this especially helpful when working the sleeves and applying the button bands. If you don’t have a steamer, I’d recommend making a bigger-than-average swatch (aim for about 20 x 20 cm / 8 x 8 in, so 40 stitches x 60 rows) and make sure to give it a good wet block to check that your tension is correct.
Sizing and ease: The Lucy Cardigan has a recommended positive ease of 20–25 cm / 8– 10 in for Sizes A-H and 15-25 cm / 6-10 in for Sizes I-L around the chest (or the widest part of your torso). However, if you wanted less ease, you would be welcome to choose a smaller size relative to your chest measurement and vice versa.

Please note that the Lucy Cardigan and Sweater have a relatively cropped and boxy fit; if you wanted to adjust the length of the body, you can easily do so but you may need more yarn than is specified below. My samples are all Size C on my 90 cm / 35 in chest.
Yarn: For my first Lucy Cardigan sample, I used Gepard Pura Lana (50% alpaca, 50% merino wool; 50 g = 115 m / 126 yds) in the shade Plum 492. For the second sample, I used Sandnes Garn Peer Gynt Tweed (75% Norwegian Wool, 25% Peruvian tweed from wool; 50 g = 91 m / 100 yds) in the shade Light Grey Tweed 1035.
For my Lucy Sweater sample, I used Drops Lima (65% wool, 35% alpaca; 50 g = 100 m / 109 yds) in the shade Wheat Mix 0206.
For my Vest sample, I used Sandnes Garn Peer Gynt Tweed (see above for details) in the shade Almond Tweed 2512 from the PetiteKnit shade card. Please note that the Vest version of this pattern was not a part of the test knit, and so the yardage estimates are purely based on my sample.
For the Lucy Cardigan, I estimate that you will need approximately 1020 (1080) 1110 (1140), 1190 (1250) 1290 (1310), 1370 (1470) 1520 (1610) m / 1120 (1180) 1210 (1250), 1300 (1370) 1400 (1440), 1490 (1610) 1660 (1760) yds of a DK-weight yarn.
For the Lucy Sweater, I estimate that you will need approximately 1010 (1070) 1100 (1130), 1180 (1240) 1270 (1310), 1360 (1460) 1510 (1610) m / 1110 (1170) 1200 (1240), 1290 (1350) 1390 (1430), 1480 (1600) 1650 (1760) yds of a DK-weight yarn.
For the cardigan vest, I estimate that you will need approximately 700 (750) 780 (810), 860 (910) 940 (970), 1020 (1110) 1150 (1240) m / 760 (820) 850 (890), 930 (1000) 1030 (1070), 1110 (1210) 1260 (1350) yds of your chosen DK-weight yarn.
For the sweater vest, I estimate that you will need approximately 690 (754) 770 (800), 840 (900) 930 (960), 1010 (1100) 1140 (1220) m / 760 (810) 850 (880), 920 (990) 1020 (1050), 1110 (1210) 1250 (1350) yds of your chosen DK-weight yarn.
Techniques include working leaning increases and decreases, establishing and working in a textured pattern, picking up and knitting stitches along horizontal and vertical edges, seaming a folded collar if making the Sweater, and working German short rows if making the vest (although these are optional).
This is a pattern suitable for confident new knitters. You will need to be able to read your knitting and work in a stitch pattern worked over 4 rows, whilst at the same time working increases over 2 rows. I am always happy to offer pattern support over email, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need help.
