LUIK sweater
This pattern is our take on the classic children’s garter stitch sweater with the ‘luik’ (hatchway) neck opening closed with buttons.
We have written the pattern for chunky weight wool using very few basic techniques making it a quick fun knit also for beginners.
The sweater is knit in one piece starting from the front hem, adding sleeves, continuing over the shoulders and down the back. The step-by-step picture tutorial will take you by the needles and lead you through the pattern.
The sizes available are from newborn to 8 years (56-128):
newborn - 1 month, (3-6 months), 9-12 months, (18-36 months ), 3-4 years, (5-6 years ), 7-8years.
Finished measurements:
Chest width: 44 (52) 60 (66) 72 (76) 80 cm.
Length: 22 (26) 30 (34) 40 (44) 47 cm.
Gauge: 10.5 sts x 22rows is 10 cm in garter stitch.
Getting the right gauge: to get the 10.5 st x 22 rows gauge you will need 35-45cm long knitting needles or a 40-80cm long circular needles between 7mm-10mm. The size you need varies a lot depending on how tight/loos you knit.
Materials:
-100 (150) 200 (250) 350 (400) 450 grams/metres of chunky weight wool like.
Make sure also to use chunky weight wool. We love the Icelandic alafosslopi. Incase you use another yarn make sure to check the gauge to get the right size. You can also create the chunky yarn by holding 2 pieces of thinner yarn together.
-4 buttons of around 1.5 cm wide.
