Madeira is a versatile rectangle “Old Shale” pattern shawl with an unexpected twist: the ends are asymmetrical in width and have different versions of the stitch pattern. Most of the body is knit at 15” wide and with a simple 4 row repeat to form the traditional looking Shale. Then increases are gradually worked within the pattern, and it switches up to stockinette “Old Shale”, making the second end of the shawl flare beautifully to 22” wide.

Water’s edge, shells, and ripples in the sand - they’re the inspiration for this casually elegant light wrap. Wear it to just cover your shoulders in the sun or in a breeze. Cozy it around your neck for a bit more warmth. You can wear Madeira in all seasons.

Neighborhood Fiber Company provided their Capital Luxury Sport for this design, and this merino/cashmere blend is particularly drapey and soft. So comfortable in any climate.

This design uses basic knit and purl stitches, yarn over increases, and direction decreases (k2tog & ssk). “Old Shale” has rows of knit, purl, and a pattern row with both the increase and decrease stitches. It’s simple and satisfying to work - enjoy its easy rhythm for the majority of the shawl. Then pay closer attention as you increase in pattern and work the flared end of the shawl using either written rows or chart - both are provided, so you can use the format you prefer.

It is necessary to significantly block the finished shawl in order to achieve finished length. Gauge given is for blocked fabric in Old Shale pattern, so making a swatch of the pattern repeat is recommended when selecting your needle size.
