This pattern is part of The Bendigo Project, 2026 and will be published on Saturday 28th of March 2026.

The theme for The Bendigo Project in 2026 is Texture & Twist, a delightful exploration of knit and crochet textured stitch patterns and cables.

The Bendigo Project Knitalong will commence on Saturday 28th of March at 7.30pm via Zoom, and will conclude with a meet up at The Australian Sheep and Wool Show, in Bendigo, Saturday July 18th 2026.

This sock design was my first foray into the world of the Mail Clad Motif but somehow ended up being the last pattern that was written up!

Knit using 4ply sock yarn on 2.50mm needles, these socks are suited best to intermediate knitters.
Featuring a toe design option for the left and right feet, a reverse stockinette (princess) sole, and a modified Eye of Partridge heel, these socks are a textural delight to knit that will have you itching to knit just one more row.

Design features: Knit in the round, 2x2 ribbing, twisted stitches, cuff down, anatomical toes, optional ribbon toes, German Twisted Cast On.

Pattern Information:
Read the instructions fully before starting each section.
If you are new to twisted stitches, I strongly recommend the use of lifelines, and to use stitch markers to highlight where your pattern repeats are.

To make things easier, the Twisted stitch motif is written out for both “In The Round” (for the leg), and “Flat” for the instep. You are not technically knitting “Flat” over the instep, but you are also not knitting the motif all the way around the foot either. Alignment here is important: we will be continuing the texture established in the leg, but for sizes A and C, this will NOT be over a multiple of 8 sts, it will be over 8 + 4. To this end, there are separate instep chats for sizes A and C, and for Size B. The Instep Chart for size B is the same as the chart for knitting In The Round.

Sizing If you have narrow feet but wide ankles, you have two options:
1) using correct needles, cast on for the next size up for the cuff, and decrease evenly down the sides of the sock, to allow it to fit comfortably on your feet. Use stitch markers to indicate where to decrease, to help keep the pattern in check
2) Size down 1 or 2 needle sizes, cast on for the next size up, and knit as instructed for the pattern
