Mairea socks
Designer: Katri Salmi
Pattern: Villa Mairea Foundation
The Mairea Socks are inspired by the many unique details of Villa Mairea (Aino and Alvar Aalto 1939).
Yarn Usage
Filcolana Arwetta:
Mustard yellow: 30 (38) g
White: 28 (35) g
Black: 26 (32) g
Gauge
In stranded colorwork: 32
sts x 38 rnds = 10 cm (4”)
The Mairea Socks are worked using three colors of fingering
weight (4-ply) sock yarn with a yardage of approximately
400 m / 100 g.
The sample pair is knitted with Filcolana Arwetta in shades
101 Natural White, 102 Black, and 136 Mustard.
However, you can substitute it with any yarn of the same weight (for example, Drops Fabel, Novita Viola, or Opal Uni 4ply).
The colors used in the pattern reflect the color palette of Villa
Mairea, but feel free to choose your own combination using
yarns of the same weight.
You will also need:
2.5 mm double-pointed needles, or 2.5 mm circular
needles if you prefer the magic loop method. Choose
your needle size according to your personal gauge.
A tapestry needle for weaving in ends and working the
decorative embroidery.
This pattern is suitable for intermediate
knitters, but we’ve included suggestions to
make it more accessible if you’d like to
simplify certain parts.
