Mam’s cardigan (read “mom’s”) is a tribute to a cardigan designed and knitted by my mom years ago. I’ve had it for almost 5 year now and she wore the hell out of it for a decade before me. Trust me when I call it a truly timeless design.

It is a generously oversized chunky cardigan, featuring dropped shoulder sleeve, deep cut V-neck and a pair of practical picked-up patch pockets. It is made with bulky yarn in a variation of moss (seed) stitch. Fast and simple project, suitable even for beginners. Big and warm like a hug, it is almost a coat. I don’t seem to be taking it off any time soon and will finally let the old one retire.

Yarn
ca. 550 600, 650, 700, 750, 800, 850, 900, 950 g of Álafosslopi with 100 m/ 109 yds in 100 g (shown in 9972 ecru heather) held together with ca. 70 75, 80, 85, 90, 100, 105, 110, 115 g o f lace weight Drops Kid-Silk mix of 75% mohair and 25% silk with 210 m /230 yds in 25 g (shown in 31 malve). Or any similar yarn(s) to match the gauge.

Needles and notions
8.0 mm (US 11) circular needles with 40 and 60 cm (16 & 24 in) cables for the fronts and sleeves, back and collar; 8.0 mm (US 11) 20 cm /8 in long double pointed needles for the pockets (optional); removable stitch markers; 4 mm (G-6) or bigger crochet hook for crochet bind offs, seaming and weaving the ends; 3 medium sized buttons (optional, round or elongated, ca. 2—3 cm /0.8—1 in in diameter); tapestry needle (optional).

Gauge
11 sts & 15 rows in 10 cm /4 in measured over variation of the seed stitch after blocking on 8.0 mm (US 11) needles. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge. The fabric has to be loose and airy, otherwise might look too bulky.
