This pattern is based on manhole covers that I photographed during Shetland Wool Week 2017. The back of the hand, the palm, and the thumb all have patterns based on different manholes. The angular top of the mitten matches the geometrical patterns, and the thumb gusset makes for a better fit around the hand.

In order to stay true to the manhole patterns, there are a few sections with longer floats. Make sure to catch them in your knitting.
