I was making several of the popular donut pillows and my 34 year-old son said he preferred a maple bar over a donut (he might have been joking but I’m not sure). So, I started looking for a maple bar pillow pattern. Come to find out – they don’t exist! I had to make one up. Here is my version of a Maple Bar Pillow!

I took a picture of the maple bar I wanted to recreate to choose the right colors – I’m SO glad I did! I absolutely would have picked the wrong colors. I ended up with a Red Heart Sun gold for the bottom, Lion Brand Ice Cream for the lighter strip in the bottom piece, and a Caron Simply Soft Autumn Maize for the frosting/glaze. I had 2 skeins of each but didn’t use up any of the skeins completely. Goes without saying … you can use any color you want I have made a chocolate version and went with the brown for the entire bottom (leaving out the lighter strip in the center of the side). It’s all about the effect you want.

I used a queen-sized pillow to stuff it with – with additional fiberfill stuffing on the ends and sides to help keep the shape of a maple bar. I used the pillow, so it would retain its shape longer. You can always use just fiberfill to stuff it, but it will take quite a bit. The gauge isn’t really an issue with this being a pillow. When I used a J hook and double strand of medium 4 ply (Red heart super saver, Red heart with Love, Hobby Lobby I love this yarn, etc.) it was approximately the same as the queen size pillow. When I was double checking the pattern/stitch counts I used a single strand of yarn with an I hook. It produced a pillow approximately 20” long and 10” wide (very cute for little kids).
