I designed this stitch pattern after visiting an elephant conservation sanctuary in Laos. I love elephants, and I wanted to create a simple pattern to depict their silhouette that could stand alone or be repeated to cover an entire garment.

This stitch pattern uses stranded colorwork. It can be knit using as many colors as you like, but you will only use two colors in any given row.

The photographed sample is the back of an eclectic sweater I knit using a variety of images from my recent travels. It was knit in fingering weight yarn to include a whole panel of marching elephants, but you could easily use this stitch pattern with a bulkier yarn as well.
