Notes from the Designer:
Margalo is a simple, structural cowl. The design, named after the songbird in E. B. White’s Stuart Little, is knit in EFA’s Enduring Worsted on smaller than average needles to produce a fabric that is tight and soft. The Linen Stitch body takes on a woven look that is clean and modern. The cowl is knit flat and has a zippered closure that is sewn in after the piece is knit. E. B. White does not specify just what variety of songbird Margalo is, but looking at Garth William’s lovely illustrations, I have always imagined her to be a wren: small, industrious, and brave. The beautiful colorway Leaves is reminiscent of a wren’s humble plumage. This cowl is meant to fit tightly to your neck to keep you safe and warm in the winter time.
- The cowl is knit flat horizontally with a zippered closure that is sewn in at the end. The cowl has a 2” (5 cm) Garter Stitch border. A two-stitch Stockinette Stitch edge is knit at the end of each row to provide an even edge for attaching the zipper.
- The single-color Enduring Worsted sample shown here used 312 yds (285.5 m) total.
- The multicolor Luster Worsted Mini sample shown here used 288 yds (263.5 m) total.
- If you would like to make the cowl longer, simply cast on extra stitches. If you would like the cowl to be taller, knit more rows of the Linen Stitch pattern.
- While gauge is not crucial for this pattern, it will affect the yardage needed.

“’My name is Margalo,’ said the bird, softly, in a musical voice. ‘I come from fields once tall with wheat, from pastures deep in fern and thistle; I come from vales of meadowsweet, and I love to whistle.’” – E.B White, “Stuart Little”
