In the first decade of the nineteenth century, wool or fur bosom-friends were specially designed tippets used to cover the low classical necklines of fashionable dresses and to keep the upper chest warm. Today, a knitted bosom-friend makes a warm, easy-to-manage accent scarf. Romantic Marianne would have doted on the softness of the alpaca yarn and the delicate harebell lace edging. Practical Elinor would have appreciated the shoulder-hugging shaping and the way that one side tucks into the decorative band on the other, keeping the scarf neatly crossed and the chest warm.
