Some time ago I asked myself: if you could knit one top that you’d want to wear every day, with any outfit, in any color… what would it look like?
It turns out I’m a really simple person. Black, white, and stripes… that’s all it takes to make me feel elegant and happy.
And when an outfit makes me happy, my whole day gets better.

Marinera (the Spanish word for a female sailor) is inspired by the timeless simplicity of nautical stripes and summer light.

Worked seamlessly from the top down, the back and fronts are knitted flat from the shoulders to the underarms before joining to work the body in the round. The construction makes it easy to try on as you go and customize the length to suit your style.

Although my sample is knit in a wonderfully soft brushed cotton, Marinera is equally happy in fingering or light sport weight yarns. In fact, I am sure you already have the perfect yarn for this in your stash!

If you can’t order the yarn from Argentina, one of my test knitters got great results and perfect gauge using Blue Sky Organic Cotton Sport.

Needles: US 2½ (3 mm) and 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles, 32” (80 cm) long.
Other notions: Stitch markers, stitch holders, tapestry needle, blocking aids.

GAUGE
24 sts and 34 rows to 4” (10cm) in Stockinette stitch on US 2½ (3 mm) needles, after blocking.

Tips for substituting:
The cotton yarn I used is catalogued as Sport weight, but it knits up at a gauge that is very similar to that of a fingering weight yarn. You can definitely substitute with fingering weight wool, which is very easy to find in most knitters’ stashes.
