Mary Challoner is a beaded shawl with an unusual top edge. The knitting starts with a garter tab and a triangular section in stocking stitch and lace, followed by a lace section with extra increases to create winged tips. The top edge has a straight section in the middle with curves at the edges to help the shawl stay on your shoulders.

Mary can be knitted in many different fingering weight yarns - wool, alpaca and silk are all recommended. The detailed lace will look best in tonal or solid colourways. The best yarns to use are those with a yardage of about 400m (440 yds) in 100 grams

Beads are recommended as they are placed to enhance the lace pattern. A total of 600 size 6/0 beads are used.

The pattern is fully charted and also has line-by-line written instructions. Row-by-row stitch counts are provided. A version of the charts for use in paper-free knitting is included.

Mary Challoner will suit you if:

  • you like detailed lace with strong geometric lines
  • you like adding beads as you knit
  • you like a pattern that changes as you work through it
  • you are happy working single yarnovers and single and double decreases with wrong side rows purled

Mary Challoner might not be for you if:

  • you are brand new to lace knitting
  • you don’t like beading your lace

This pattern benefited from the input of some truly excellent test knitters: goodnurse, iowaknitter, Carmen73, KateB660, Fredchen, marthajane73, katisha, and Jani22.
