Masonic Illusion Scarf
Illusion scraft with a Masonic device knitted into one end followed by repeats of the ridged pattern.
The effect (shadow knitting) is achieved by a plain knitted row followed by a row where the design is purled and the rest is knitted, changing to a contrasting colour and knitting a row followed by a row where the design is knitted and the rest of the row purled. As such, each line of the pattern is worked four times.
I’m afraid the chart is on its side, row A should be at the bottom and for BQ at the top.
On the chart each row (A to BQ) is knitted in the main colour, then the white squares are knitted and the blue ones are purled, then change to the contrasting colour and knit the row, then purl the white squares and knit the coloured ones. Then move on to the next row.
Designed for my brother, I know Freemasonry is not a hidden or secret activity any more but I like the idea that the emblem is both visible and hidden, depending on your viewpoint.
I made a mistake when I was knitting up the end of the scarf, in one of the pictures you can see a row of blue and white that looks different - in this case I knitted both rows of the contrast colour and it lies much flatter than the rest. Unfortunately I only noticed it well after finishing.
My tension is pretty tight, I’m aiming for under two balls of each colour, starting on the blue (10) and contrasting with the white. If desired, the pattern can be finished by repeating the motif design from BQ to A to give a double ended scarf (I’d recommend only leaving 5-15 stripes between the patterns as they come out at around 85 cm long).
I don’t own the motif pattern for the Masons, I based it on a copyright free version available online.
