I came up with this pattern for friends who recently had their first baby (Mason) and wanted a chicken hat for his newborn photos.

The hat measure 13’ in circumference and 4.5’ high, not including the comb. It should fit an average sized newborn (Mason was 7lbs5oz and was 2 weeks old in the photo).

I used Bernat Softee Baby and it worked very well, about 1oz (out of a 5oz ball) of white, plus small amounts of yellow for the beak and red for the comb. The hat is knit in the round on either double pointed needles or a longer circular using the magic loop method and the other parts are knit flat.
