Matchbox Pet Squirrel
This pattern is for a small low-sew squirrel and an acorn for it to eat! The pattern also includes printable templates to enable you to make the matchbox and name card, making it an ideal gift, stocking filler or craft fair item.
This project involves very little sewing – the arms and legs are added while you make the body, so the only sewing is to attach the head. If you choose to make the squirrel without the box, this design also works well in thicker chenille yarns (resulting in a larger finished item).
The pattern is written in English using American crochet terms and contains loads of photos to help you every step of the way.
You will need:
Yarn of your choice. I used dk weight yarn (equivalent to light worsted, weight 3) and my finished squirrel measures approximately 7.5cm tall. Using a thicker yarn than this may result in your pet squirrel not fitting inside the accompanying box.
You will need the following colours:
- Main squirrel colour - I use tan, grey or brown (approx. 20m).
- Tummy & face colour - I used cream (approx. 1.75m).
- Acorn cap colour - I used brown (approx. 1.5m).
- Acorn nut colour - I used gold (approx. 1.5m). Please note - The amount of yarn used will vary according to yarn weight, hook size and stitch tension so these measurements are only a rough guide. The pattern refers to the colours that I used, however these can be substituted for colours of your choice.
You will also need:
- A suitable size hook for the yarn you have chosen - I used a 4mm hook.
- A pair of 6mm black safety eyes.
- A small amount of toy stuffing.
- Other tools you will need are a needle, some scissors and some stitch markers.
- A metal brush (such as a pet brush) if you want to make your squirrel’s tail fluffy (this is optional).
- To make the matchbox and name card, you will need access to a printer and to print the relevant pages out onto thick white paper or thin white card.
You are welcome to sell the items that you make using this pattern, but please do not sell / share the pattern itself. Thank you.
