This knitted hat pattern incorporates a Japanese kanji character (Matsu) for the word Pine, which is the inspiration and theme for this hat! Pine trees are adored in Japan, and are the traditional subject of many beautiful artworks. The motifs representing this iconic tree flow around the hat just like Byobu (Japanese multi-panel folding screens), presenting a series of stylized images showing different shapes and aspects of pine trees.
