When life gives you an extra skein, make a hat — the Matunuck Beanie is cable-y, textured companion to my Matunuck pullover (coming Sept 23!).

After finishing Matunuck, I was left with one full skein of the delightfully woolly, soft, and warm Woodnote DK by Baa Ram Ewe and immediately cast on this companion beanie. The hat uses the same braided cable and garter rib stitch as in the Matunuck pullover, so you can use it as a wearable swatch for the sweater, or make it for your woolies basket to grab on crisp mornings.

The Matunuck Beanie is a double-brim style made from the bottom up from an optional tubular cast-on.

Finished Sizes
Sizes 1 (2, 3); 16 (17.5, 19)” / 40 (44, 47.5) cm finished circumference (unstretched), after blocking; 8 (8, 8)” / 20 (20, 20) cm finished height (folded), after blocking; 10.5 (10.5, 10.5)” / 26.5 (26.5, 26.5) cm, finished height (unfolded), after blocking. Beanie shown in Size 3; 19” / 47.5 cm, stretches to fit a 21-23” / 52.5-57.5 cm head circumference.

Yarn
Baa Ram Ewe Woodnote DK (34% Bluefaced Leicester, 33% Masham, 33% Merino; 223 yds / 204 m; 3.5 oz / 100 g): mouse (natural heathered gray), 1 (1, 1) skein.

Needles
Size A (for hat body): Size US 6 / 4 mm: 16” / 40 cm circular (circ) and double-pointed needles (dpn), or preferred method for working small-circumferences.
Size B (for ribbing): Size US 5 / 3.75 mm: 16” / 40 cm circular (circ), or preferred method for working small-circumferences.
Size C (optional, for tubular cast on): Size US 4 / 3.5 mm: 16” / 40 cm circular (circ), or preferred method for working small-circumferences.
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions
Cable needle (cn); tapestry needle; stitch markers (m); optional, waste yarn.

Gauge
18 sts and 33 rows = 4” / 10 cm in Garter Rib Stitch on Size A needle, after blocking.
