May Day is celebrated in many Western cultures in honor of Spring. When creating this design, the image of dancers moving around the pole with a colored ribbon came so vividly to mind and I set out to see how I could replicate that image into a cowl design. Using cables and fair-isle knitting, I was able to create a pattern where two strips of color wound themselves around the body of the cowl, like the colored ribbon winding themselves around the pole.

This pattern also represents the joy of Spring, through the usage of happy colors. Spring still can be a bit chilly though, so bundling up in a cowl is needed sometimes!

Thank you to my test knitters for their work on getting this pattern in the best shape as it could be! Here’s what they had to say about it:

  • I loved learning a new technique. This is an easy pattern to learn colorwork. It’s not complicated and seeing the swirl come together on the cowl was amazing. - iya1989
  • Love the look! - Pxh
  • It was easy to work without referring to pattern constantly & the yarn was a delight to work with. - blytherue
  • I loved everything about this! The pattern is all easy to read and understand. - Br7394
