Fair Isle knitting is a living art and, as the craft moved to other islands in the Shetland group, fresh ideas came into play, including one popular pattern said to be based on linoleum flooring! And so it is with Elli Stubenrauch’s mittens—she looked no farther than the upholstery of the chair in which she was comfortably slouched while brainstorming ideas for this project. Over the course of a few drafts, the flower motif evolved into more of a third cousin, evolutionarily speaking, but it definitely owes its roots to one Slipperchairius comfortablus.
