This is a relaxed-fit spring/summer garment, featuring panels of Inlay Knitting down each shoulder and down the centre front. The name Medina is a reflection of the source of inspiration for the design; a few years ago I was lucky enough to visit Marrakesh and exploring the medina – the old, walled part of the North African city – is one of my favourite memories. The Inlay Knitting panels are inspired by the Moroccan fretwork panelling I saw decorating many of the buildings there.

CONSTRUCTION
This garment is worked top-down, in a mixture of flat and in the round. Stitches for the back of the neck, shoulder panels and the start of the front are cast on and the piece is worked flat initially, shaping the shoulders and the front of the neck. The front is then joined and the piece is worked in the round, until the shoulder length is reached. Front and back are then worked separately to form the armholes, after which front and back are rejoined to work the body in the round.
Stitches are picked up around the neck and armholes to work the neckband and armhole cuffs.

You can choose to either work the Inlay Knitting panels as you knit the garment, or add them on later, or even a mixture of both options, such as by working the centre front panel as you knit and adding the two shoulder panels in later.

This garment is graded into sizes 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9, 10). Recommended positive ease is 4+” / 10+ cm at the chest circumference.

GAUGE
Using 3.25 mm / US size 3 needles, or needle size required to meet gauge, 26 stitches over 32 rounds in both stockinette stitch and colourwork, wet blocked, creates a 4x4” / 10x10 cm square.

YARN
For this design, a fingering weight yarn is required for the Main Colour. For the Inlay Knitting sections, a sport or DK weight yarn can be used, or a fingering-weight yarn held double.

The sample has been worked using West Yorkshire Spinners’ Signature 4ply base (75% Wool / 25% Nylon; 400 m / 437 yds per 100 g) in colourway Marshmallow as the Main Colour.

The Inlay Knitting sections have been worked using Primrose Yarn Co.’s Homestead Sport base (100% American Superwash Wool; 228 metres / 250 yards per ~75g) in colourway On the Cape.
