Melena
Note: the ability to read charts is essential for this pattern!
ABOUT: Jumping on the pointelle trend, Melena is perfect for the early autumn days when it’s not cold enough for a hat but you need a little something to guard against the wind. It can also be tied at the neck as a small scarf—or size up your yarn and needles for a cozy shawlette! Tapering down from the widest point, it’s the best kind of project: it gets smaller instead of bigger!
SIZES: One size, variable depending on your gauge.
Sample shown measures 29”/74 cm wide across the top and 14 1/2”/37 cm deep.
This is the minimum width I recommend for a kerchief that ties around the head!
YARN: Illimani Sabri I, 85% organic cotton, 15% baby alpaca, 437 yd/3.5 oz (400 m/100 g)
Or approximately 225 yd/205 m fingering weight yarn.
GAUGE: 19 sts x 40 rows = 4”/10 cm in charted pointelle pattern, blocked
Gauge is not essential for this pattern but will impact your project’s width and yardage; be sure to block your swatch fairly aggressively width-wise to open up the eyelets and mimic the final project blocking
NEEDLES: US 2/2.75 mm needles, or size needed to meet gauge (or to produce desired fabric with your yarn!).
