In Greek mythology, the Meliae were nymphs of the ash tree, whose name they shared. The sisterhood’s nature was to appear collectively. They are invoked in the plural, reflecting their enmeshed nature. In the same way that the sisters are forever entwined the climbing vines and tangled leaves of this pattern cannot be separated.

The size of these mittens is determined by the gauge and is altered by changing needle size.

Size 8”/ 20.5 cm: Use size 1/ 2.25 mm
Size 8.5”/ 21.5 cm: Use size 1.5/ 2.5 mm
Size 9”/ 23 cm: Use size 2/ 2.75 mm

The design is worked in stranded colourwork. Carry the colour not in use loosely across the wrong side of the work.

Stranded colourwork can pull in and become inelastic if there is not enough slack in the floats (strands on the back of the work). When in doubt, make the floats looser than you think they should be.

In order to avoid long floats on the inside of the mittens, which may snag your fingers, catch the float with the working yarn when it extends farther than 4 stitches. Stagger these spots so that the unused colour is not trapped in the same place on consecutive rounds.

You can work these mittens on double-pointed needles, two circular needles, or one long circular needle for Magic Loop.

Materials needed:
2 different colours of fingering weight yarn
Main colour (MC): 210 - 240 yards (192 - 219 meters)
Contrasting colour (CC): 120 - 150 yards (109 - 137 meters)
