DESIGNER FIONA Alice is known for her cool, contemporary style, and her first project for The Knitter is a toe-up sock design featuring vertical stripes of colour. It’s the ideal project for using up some special skeins of hand-dyed yarn, especially in two boldly contrasting shades. Fiona has used Tough Sock from The Uncommon Thread, which is hand-dyed in Brighton in a range of delicious colours.

Pattern uses Turkish cast-on.

Yarn: The Uncommon Thread (80% superwash Bluefaced Leicester wool, 20% nylon; 100 g = 366 m / 400 yds)
Yarn A: Citrus Peel 1 (1, 1) skeins
Yarn B: Ashes to Ashes 1 (1, 1) skeins

Gauge: 36 sts & 50 rows = 10 cm / 4” in Stocking Stitch on 2.25 mm / US 1 after blocking.

Needles: 2.25 mm / US 1 & 2 mm / US 0 long circular
needles for Magic Loop Method or DPNs. Always use a needle size that will result in the correct gauge after blocking.

Notions: 2 stitch markers, darning needle

Notes: These socks are worked from the toe up. This pattern is written as if the knitter is using the Magic Loop Method: the top of the foot is worked across the first needle and the sole of the foot is worked across the second needle. However, DPNs can be used instead: work instructions for first needle across 1st and 2nd DPNs, for second needle work across 3rd and 4th DPNs.

Each contracting stripe of Yarn A is worked in Intarsia, with its own strand of yarn to avoid long floats on the side of the sock. Simply pull the stand up from two rounds below when it is required. To make it more manageable, cut several lengths of Yarn A, 60 cm / 24” long. If the length of yarn runs out before the line is completed, cut another length and join it. When each line is finished, trim the excess yarn, leaving a tail to weave in later. Make sure to leave enough of the old and new strands to be able weave in later.
