Midnight Diamond Blanket
The Midnight Diamond Blanket began with a photograph of patterned tilework. The kind where one simple geometric tile, repeated many times, builds into something far more intricate than any single piece suggests. I wanted to see whether tapestry crochet could create the same kind of effect and it turns out it can.
Each square contains four diamonds radiating from the centre, enclosed by curved lines. The squares are worked separately and joined with a discrete slip stitch join on the back, so the colourwork runs unbroken across the whole blanket.
The finished throw measures 92 x 114 cm (approximately 36 x 45 in) for 20 squares, and it’s simple to size up or down by making more or fewer squares.
Tapestry crochet can sound more advanced than it is here. Almost the entire blanket uses a single stitch, US double crochet (UK treble), with just one round of single crochet in the border. All the patterning comes from carrying and switching between two colours, so there’s no complex stitch sequence to track. That makes this pattern a great way to try tapestry crochet if it’s new to you.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
A 6-page PDF: full written instructions, a colourwork chart, pattern notes, step-by-step photos, and a link to a video tutorial for the square. Provided in both US and UK crochet terms.
DETAILS
Yarn: Swish DK by WeCrochet (100% superwash merino), DK weight
- Sample A: Nutmeg Heather (10 balls) + Lost Lake Heather (6 balls)
- Sample B: Delft Heather (10 balls) + White (6 balls) Yardage: approx. 1,250 yds (1,150m) main colour, 750 yds (700m) contrast, for 20 squares Hook: 3.5 mm Gauge: each square 21 x 21 cm (8.25 in). Gauge isn’t critical, though for tapestry crochet slightly tighter stitches than usual produce the best results. Skill level: intermediate - a good first tapestry crochet project for a confident beginner
A note on colour: the one thing that matters is tonal contrast. Choose two colours where one is significantly lighter than the other, not just different in hue. Photograph them together and view it in black and white to check.
