Beads are pre-strung. 392 size 8/0 beads are required. I used magenta lined amethyst ab 8/0 triangles from Earth Faire.

The Midnight Lace Stole is a design that literally came to me in my sleep. I saw the unusual crescent shape in a dream and then found lace patterns that worked with the shape. The center panel is wedge shaped, which adds extra width to the bottom edge of the stole, and short rows at the ends of the long sides add even Stowith the long ends slung over one or both shoulders. The beads add mystery and a subtle gleam to the rather dark, intense colorway.

Wendy Johnson has completed her version of the Midnight Lace Stole and has posted an additional chart for the center section. Please see her blog archive here for the chart.

Errata: On Rows 9, 11, 13, and 15, the decreases of the middle of the panel can be mirrored if the knitter so desires. This section of the rows would then read, “k2, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, ssk, k2”, instead of “k2, ssk, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, ssk, k2” as written.

Delete Row 17, and renumber Rows 19-41 as Rows 17-39. The correct stitch count for these rows should be 51 stitches, not 53 as stated.

In addition, two of the charts in the book contain mistakes. The Arrow Lace Chart should have the sl1-k2tog-psso on Row 5 but the symbol appears on Row 6. The Chart Key is missing the symbol for k3tog.

On the Right side panel, the pattern contains mistakes for the final rows of the short row section:

Row 33 (RS): Syif, knit across entire row, picking up wraps and working them together with their stitches, and at the same time increase evenly across the row to arrive at a total of 113 sts.
Row 34 (WS): Syif, purl across row.

The Left Side instructions are also not correct. They should read:

Left Side Panel
With RS facing and beginning at the top edge, attach a new ball of yarn and pick up and knit 109 sts along left edge of center panel (approximately 2 out of every 3 edge sts). Turn. With WS facing, K3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. Continue as for right side panel up to the short row section.

Short Rows
Left side short rows are worked differently than the right side short rows, as the w&t is done on WS rows. The short rows are again worked in 8-row increments across the edge of the stole, but since the patterns are hidden from view, the count is over purl sts. The return (RS) rows are then worked in pattern to the end of the row. It may be helpful to place stitch markers between the 20-st panels when working the purl short rows.
Row 1 (set up row): Syif, k2, yo, sl1-k2tog-psso, yo, p1, midnight lace pattern over 15 sts, p1, repeat from to last 6 sts, yo, sl1-k2tog-psso, yo, k3.
Row 2: Syif, k2, p80 (4 repeats of RS lace panel, consisting of lace column pattern over 3 sts, p1, midnight lace pattern over 15 sts, p1 – 20 sts), p19, w&t.
Row 3 and all subsequent odd numbered rows in this section: Work in pattern to end.
Row 4: Syif, k2, p80 (4 repeats of RS lace panel, consisting of lace column pattern over 3 sts, p1, midnight lace pattern over 15 sts, p1 – 20 sts), p15, w&t.
Row 6: Syif, k2, p80 (4 repeats of RS lace panel, consisting of lace column pattern over 3 sts, p1, midnight lace pattern over 15 sts, p1 – 20 sts), p11, w&t.
Row 8: Syif, k2, p80 (4 repeats of RS lace panel, consisting of lace column pattern over 3 sts, p1, midnight lace pattern over 15 sts, p1 – 20 sts), p6, w&t.
Rows 10-16: Work as for Rows 2-8, but p60 (3 repeats of the RS lace panel) before the partial section and w&t.
Rows 18-24: Work as for Rows 2-8, but p40 (1 repeats of the RS lace panel) before the partial section and w&t.
Rows 26-30: Work as for Rows 2-6, but p20 (1 repeat of the RS lace panel) before the partial section and w&t. End this section after the third short row.
Row 32 (WS): Syif, purl across entire row, picking up wraps and working them together with their stitches, and at the same time increase evenly across the row to arrive at a total of 113 sts.
