These mittens were inspired by my friend’s homeland, Norway. In essence, they are a mini-travelog. Starting at the bottom of the mitten: the traditional Norwegian star, evergreens, fish, waves of the sea, Viking ships, more trees topped by images of the Midnight Sun and northern lights. The blue background and the red and white dividers are reminiscent of the flag of Norway.

Kits are available from Heritage Spinning and Weaving.

Skill level: Experienced. Skills needed include stranded knitting, knitting from a chart and provisional cast on. Pattern includes provisional cast on and knitting instructions, as well as stranded knitting tips.

One size: Adult Medium.
For a longer mitten, insert a second repeat of the fish motif or add additional background (navy rows) above the thumb gusset and before working the decreases.

Gauge: 36 sts = 4”/10 cm in stockinette stitch in Fair Isle pattern worked in the round using larger needles.
