Miķeļi Socks are worked in an unconventional direction, beginning with the heel and progressing toward both the toe and then the leg. This unique construction allows the sock to be shaped gradually while creating an engaging knitting experience inspired by the abundance and patchwork character of the autumn harvest.
The heel is worked first in a contrasting color using a traditional heel flap and heel turn, creating a comfortable, well-fitting cup. From there, stitches are picked up along the heel flap to form the sole, which is worked flat and decorated with stripes. Gradual decreases shape the gusset before the sole continues to the desired foot length.
The toe is then worked using short rows with double stitches, creating a smooth, rounded shape. Next, the instep is knitted separately in stockinette stitch and joined to the sole as you work, resulting in a seamless, sturdy foot construction.
Once the foot is complete, the provisional cast-on at the heel is unraveled, and the stitches are returned to the needles to begin the leg. The leg is worked in the round in stockinette stitch, followed by a 1x1 ribbed cuff finished with a Tubular bind-off for a polished, elastic edge.
This construction offers an enjoyable departure from traditional cuff-down socks, combining familiar techniques with an unexpected knitting sequence that keeps the project engaging from start to finish.

Yarn: Fingering-weight sock yarn in one main color and three contrasting colors.
MC: approximately 120 (135, 160) m.
CC1: approximately 95 (105, 130) m.
CC2: approximately 35 (40, 50) m.
CC3: approximately 35 (40, 50) m.
Yardage may vary if your gauge/yarn is different.
Gauge: 32 sts & 42 rows = 10 cm in stockinette stitch, worked flat.
Needles:
2.25 mm DPNs (or a long circular needle for the Magic Loop method)
Or adjust needle size to meet gauge
Other notions: stitch markers, darning needle, measuring tape.
