The MILE HIGH hat is exactly what it sounds like: an extra-long head-topper with an exaggerated folded brim and just the right amount of over-the-top charisma.

CONSTRUCTION

This hat is worked in the round in brioche stitch, from the brim up, and was designed to stay upright. Its top is shaped using decreases and can be finished using the classic method (red hat) or grafted (green hat).

Brioche stitch is at the same time stretchy and shapely, making it ideal for this one-size-fits-all design, perfect for gifting or sharing! Make sure to use a yarn with good memory and elasticity, otherwise the hat might become too loose with wear.

It’s easy to adjust this hat to your personal preference. For the perfect fisherman hat, fold the brim twice. For a demurer look, shorten it slightly. The pattern also includes instructions for an alternative, flush-to-the-head hipster version (brown hat).

KNITTING LEVEL

Intermediate. My testers said that this is a great first-time brioche project. The pattern includes step-by-step instructions, explains the used techniques and includes links to video tutorials.

TECHNIQUES:
Brioche stitch, RS brioche decreases (brLsl, brRsl), RS decreases (K2tog), Italian cast-on, grafting.

ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL

This is a one-size-fits-all pattern. The circumference of the finished hat is 46 cm (18½”), making it suitable for head circumferences 52 - 62 cm (20¾ - 24¾”).

The full length of the finished hat is 35 cm (14”). With the recommended brim fold of about 12 cm (4¾”), the hat will be about 23 cm (9¼”) long.

For head circumferences 49 - 54 cm (19½ - 21½“) and 60 - 65 cm (24 - 26”), a slightly different gauge can be used to get a better fit.

Hipster version (brown hat): the full length of the hat is about 28.5 cm (11½”). With the recommended brim fold of about 7.5 cm (3”), the hat will be about 21 cm (8½”) long. If necessary, adjust the overall hat length to best suit your head.
