Inspired by the main character in The Clockwork Scarab, Wilhelmina Holmes (niece of another famous problem-solving Holmes), I wanted to design a jacket with a little bit of Steampunk flair. Featuring a wide back cable panel with integrated waist shaping, and a textured/cabled pattern for the sleeves, this jacket is knit from the bottom hem up in pieces and seamed. The front bands are trimmed with a small cable motif as well and the jacket benefits from further fitting with a set of front waist darts. The sleeves are knit in the round up to the underarms, and then worked back and forth to shape the sleeve cap. The jacket is finished with a simple rolled-edge neckline and a set of glass buttons from Moving Mud.

Sample is shown in size 34 ½ with 1-2 inches of positive ease. Due to the waist shaping on the front, this jacket has a fitted silhouette. If you’d prefer a boxier fit without going up a size, you may omit the waist shaping on the front and knit those pieces without decreasing/increasing for the waist and bust.

Note that the cabled patterns are presented in chart form only.

If you choose to substitute yarn, make sure to pick a sportweight yarn with a firm twist and limited to no halo to ensure the cable pattern shows well.
