Mini to Merry Shawl (Advent-able!)
Mini to Merry is a festive, color-shifting adventure designed to make the most of your yarn advent calendar. Knit sideways in a classic triangular shape, this shawl features alternating bands of sand stitch and reverse sand stitch—each mini-skein bringing its own surprise twist of texture and hue. As you count down the days, the shawl grows and flows, finished with a handsome Icord edge using your full-sized skein finale. Whether you unwrap warm jewel tones, frosted pastels, or sparkling brights, Mini to Merry turns your advent minis into a wearable celebration.
Sample shown is still WIP. Pattern will be updated soon with the finished shawl, but I wanted you to have this pattern available to start working your Advent calendars right away!
Yarn & Needles
100g/245 yards of #3 DK weight yarn as the Main Color (MC) and 24 20g minis of #3 DK weight yarn or equivalent yardage (referred to as Mini 1, Mini 2, etc.)
US Size 8 (5.00mm) circular needles with a 32” cable length.
2 US Size 8 (5.00mm) double-pointed needles (for working Icord edge). Or, you can use the same circulars as the main project, pulling through the same as you would a DPN each row.
Finished Measurements
The shawl (with Icord, blocked) measures 108“ wide (wingspan from tip to tip across longest edge) and 36” long from center of neckline to tip at longest point.
Notes
The shawl is a triangle knit sideways, starting by casting on at the right side, increasing toward the center, and decreasing toward the left side. You can work each mini as you open them, or wait to
see if you’d like to arrange them differently.
All minis are worked either in Sand Stitch or Reverse Sand Stitch, alternating every other mini. At its most basic, Sand Stitch is worked by purling every stitch on the right side of the work, and
repeating a purl 1, knit 1 pattern across the wrong side. Reverse sand stitch is the exact opposite right side/wrong side pattern.
Because of increases and decreases, as well as color changes, there are exceptions and considerations as you go. Each mini is written out with specific instructions.
Increases are always worked as the last stitch of the right side row (kfb). Decreases are always worked as the first stitch of the wrong side row (k2tog).
The first row of every section is knit across (with the last stitch kfb if increasing) instead of what would be dictated by Sand Stitch. This moves the purl bars to the back which would be unsightly
with contrasting color changes.
At the end of each section, cut the yarn as you are completely finished with the mini you’ve just worked. Once all 24 minis are worked, you will use the full skein to add an Icord border around the
entire shawl.
