Mittens Northern Tales
Description: The mittens are worked in the round using the Magic loop method. First, a hem with a rolled edge is worked in the Latvian braid pattern, followed by a 1x1 rib with twisted knit stitches. Then, continue in stockinette stitch while working a stranded colorwork (Fair Isle/jacquard) pattern with floats, and shaping the thumb gusset. Once the gusset is complete, the thumb stitches are placed on hold. The main body of the mitten is worked according to the provided charts. The thumb is worked last.
Difficulty: Intermediate, not for beginners
Required skills: Knitting in the round using the Magic loop method, performing left-leaning and right-leaning increases from a yarnover, performing left-leaning and right-leaning decreases, working stranded colorwork with floats.
Size: One size, fits palm circumference 18-19 cm.
Size can be adjusted by changing gauge.
Gauge after blocking: 36 sts x 36 rows = 10 x 10 cm in stockinette stitch
Needles: Circular 2.0 mm (US 0), cable length 80-100 cm
Yarn: 420 meters / 100 grams
My version uses Alize Comfort Socks super wash (main colors: cream (01) and hand-dyed Lyon blue)
Yarn amount: Approximately 50 grams of each color
Additional tools: Stitch markers, waste yarn.
Important! When working stranded colorwork, to avoid long floats, I twist/cross the yarns on the wrong side every 4-5 stitches.
