This is the third pattern in my Doctor Who Companions series, inspired by the companion Donna Noble. Donna is a character that goes through a major transformation over her time as a companion, from innocent bride, to half Time Lord, and back to her previous life with no memory of her time as the Doctor’s companion.

This shawl reflects Donna’s journey, going from a lovely gentle lace pattern, through the complexities of being part Time Lord, and back to a larger and more open-work lace pattern. Coupled with Tri’Coterie’s lovely gradient MCN, Donna’s journey is told through a beautiful lace and cabled shawl tied together with a centre cable inspired by her name in Gallifreyan.

Skills Needed

  • Basic lace knitting skills: knit stitch, knit two together (k2tog), slip slip knit (ssk), and yarn over (yo).

  • Intermediate knitting skills: twisted stitches; sl1, k2tog, psso, sl2, k1, p2sso; make 1 knitwise, make 1 purlwise, and a 3-stitch gathered stitch.

  • Intermediate cabling skills: 1x1, 2x1, 2x2, 1x1x1 and 2x1x2 cables, using knits, purls, and knit through the back loop.

Finished Dimensions

Approximately 132.5 cm (52 inches) long and 67.5 cm (26.5 inches) deep after blocking.
