This pattern is temporarily unavailable pending a rewrite! Does the construction flow in an intuitive way, like you’d expect? No it does not.

Knit in lofty wool, this simple tube cowl features a unique construction. With the colorwork instructions, this construction results in a cowl with interesting chevron-shaped stripes.

This project is knit both flat and in the round.

The pattern is written for worsted-weight/heavy DK, but includes some very light notes on customization. (In other words, once you’ve read over this pattern and understand how it’s put together, you should be able to knit it in a lighter or heavier yarn by following the pattern as written but adapting the stitch counts, which is pretty nice, I think, since this would be a good handspun multicolor project. Size is determined by the first section knit, and it’s easy to adapt! However, I have not included detailed numbers or instructions for customization beyond laying out those hints a couple of times in the text, so there’s that.)

Materials:

  • Yarn: Woolstok 50 (or substitute) in three colors: 75g/185yds C1 (Storm Cloud), 8g/20yds C2 (Golden Meadow), 12g/30yds C3 (Gray Harbor). Woolstok 50 has 123 yards per skein.
  • 1 24”circular needle in US7/4.25mm, or size needed for gauge.
  • 1 16” circular needle in same size, or smaller, for a spare (realistically, any size you can use as a spare needle works here! You’ll use it to hold sts, and you’ll need to be able to knit them from the holder, ideally.)
  • Optional: 1 16” circular 1-2 sizes up from size needed for main gauge, for borders
  • Removable stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:
Gauge for the sample shown is 16 sts and 36 rows in 4”/10cm of blocked garter st, knit flat. This is gauge for the body; you’ll need to work loosely to knit the final edges.

Measurements:
As shown, this cowl measures 11.5”/29cm tall and 10.25“/26cm flat across, making for a (relaxed) circumference of about 20.5“/52cm.
