Monarch Butterfly Bag
3-in-1 Monarch Butterfly Bag crochet pattern
In this project, you will crochet a monarch wing-shaped bag with an adjustable strap that can be worn three ways: as a crossbody, shoulder bag, or backpack. The butterfly wing motif is worked using short rows and consists of two separate layers, meaning no color changes are required unless you want an even more colorful bag.
The 52-page pattern includes written instructions in English using US terms, clear diagrams, and detailed step-by-step photo guides.
The finished bag is customizable and makes a great gift or everyday accessory.
Size: 28 x 12 x 4 cm (11 x 4.7 x 1.6 in), measured at the widest points when using the recommended materials. You can adjust the strap length to suit your needs. This pattern can be adapted to different yarn weights, so final sizes will vary with hook size and materials used. If you prefer a smaller or larger bag, choose finer or bulkier yarn and a suitable hook, and adjust the strap length accordingly.
Estimated make time: 6-12 hours.
Difficulty level: intermediate
MATERIALS:
1. HOOK(S)
Steel crochet hook 4 mm • US size G
2. YARN/ THREAD
Lily Sugar’n Cream Original (#4 worsted weight, 100% cotton; 71 g/109 m each skein)
- Color A: Hot orange - 170 m (186 yds)
- Color B: Black - 70 m (77 yds)
White or ivory scrap yarn (any fiber/weight) for the dots (or substitute with needle felt, dimensional fabric paint, beads, or sequins).
Clear Fishing Line (Optional): Carried between stitches for extra structure and reinforcement. I used Trilene Big Game 4.5 (0.35 mm) because my yarn was a bit softer than I wanted, but if your yarn naturally holds its shape well, you can skip this!
3. OTHER
- A button
- Two D rings (2 x 2 cm)
4. NOTIONS
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
