There’s nothing scary about this adorable stuffed Monster Friend! At about 13.5” tall and a little over 11” across (about 22.5” measured around the middle) it’s a perfect plushie, toy or pillow. There are also directions for a slightly smaller version that is about 10.5” tall. The pattern is fun and not too difficult to crochet. It makes a great gift! I designed it in rainbow colors but and you can change up the colors as desired to match holiday themes, sports teams, décor or personal preference.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

G Crochet Hook

Soft Worsted Weight Yarn in 4 colors plus a small amount of White and Black. I used Vanna’s Choice in the following colors: (approximate amounts) Colonial Blue, 50 yds; Mustard, 25 yds; Scarlet, 25 yds; Kelly Green, 25 yds; White, 10 yds; Black, 5 yds. One skein of each color would make several Monster Friends!

NOTE ON YARN: I discovered that the yarn I recommended for this project, Vanna’s Choice, has been discontinued and may have limited availability. It is available online but may not be available in stores. Love Crafts appears to have most of the colors. However, in case you have trouble finding Vanna’s Choice, I have identified several yarns which are similar in color and gauge. Just about any soft, worsted weight acrylic or acrylic blend yarn should work. I created an Addendum PDF (instant down load upon purchase of the pattern)with the corresponding colors for each brand.

The substitute yarns are Red Heart With Love, Red Heart Soft, Brava Worsted – all 100% Acrylic, and Might Stitch, a wool/acrylic blend. All are washable. The Red Heart brands are available online from various sellers and at many craft stores. The Brava and Mighty Stitch are available online at We Crochet.

See approximate yardages above.

Stitch markers (optional but highly recommended)

Yarn pins (optional but useful)

Tapestry Needle to attach pieces, embroider toenails, and weave in ends.

Poly-fill (stuffing)

SKILL LEVEL: EASY – some experience helpful. You’ll need to know basic stitches, be able to work in the round and change colors. There is some shaping involved but it is fairly basic. You’ll need to be able to hand sew the pieces together. There is some embroidery, but there is a how to link if you are not familiar with the stitch used.

GAUGE: Gauge is not important for this project. 7 stitches and 6 rows in SC are about 2 inches. Each stripe in the body is about 1.5 inches (not including the starting and ending stripe which work up slightly larger to accommodate the shape). For the smaller version, each stripe in the body is about 1.25 inches. Your gauge may differ, and you may want to adjust your hook size depending on how you crochet and whether you use a different type of yarn.
