My three year old just adores monster trucks (as most three year olds do!), and I designed this hat for him. This will be the perfect bright and cozy hat for your monster truck lover as well!

This pattern begins with striped earflaps, then the hat is worked in the round from the bottom up. The monster truck design is knitted using the stranded knitting technique. The hat is topped with a pompom, and optional I-cord ties are attached to the earflaps.

This pattern includes five sizes: baby (16” head circumference), toddler (17.5” head circumference), child (19” head circumference), adult small (20.5” head circumference), adult medium (22” head circumference).

The gauge is 19 stitches and 25 rows over 4” in stockinette stitch.

This pattern is recommended for intermediate knitters. You must be able to follow a color chart, work in stranded knitting carrying three colors. An alternative technique for creating the monster truck design is duplicate stitch after the hat has been knitted.

For the orange and green version, I used Patons Classic Wool, a worsted weight wool (100% wool, 210 yds per ball). You will need 1 ball each of Grey Mix (#00224), Vibrant Orange (#77738), Jasmine Green (#77739), Black (#00226). For the blue and red version, I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease, a worsted weight yarn (80% acrylic, 20% wool, 197 yds per ball). You will need 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) balls of Grey Heather (#151) and 1 ball each of Blue Heather (#107), Ranch Red (#102), Black (#153). You may substitute any worsted weight yarn for this pattern. You will also need 16” circular needles and double pointed needles in size US 7 or whatever size necessary to get the gauge, and 16” needles one size smaller for the ribbing.

This pattern includes written instructions, a full-color chart, and notes on the stranded knitting technique.
