A knitting pattern for a very realistic morel mushroom which is around 12 cm (4.7 in) tall. The smaller specimen is around 7 cm (2.7 in). A fun challenge for an experienced knitter

Included in the pattern:

  • pdf with altogether 10 pages
  • very detailed step-by-step written instructions tons of pictures and helpful tips
  • dedicated video tutorial to navigate around the more unusual passages of the pattern
  • video tutorials for all other knitting techniques are available (on my blog)

Difficulty:
Intermediate+

These morels are knit in the round on 2.00mm double-pointed needles. Magic loop should remain a possibility (except maybe for the last decrease round, where you always have fewer than 16 stitches on your needles.
Both versions are knit in one piece. You will have to pick up stitches to create the ridges of the bigger morel. As a result, there will be quite some tails to weave in. Wire or a stick is needed to create a stand for the finished project.

Yarn and yardage:
While you can more or less ignore my gauge, I really recommend picking a good light-fingering yarn (scraps are enough). Knitting this mushroom with bigger needles and a heavier yarn will result in a much bigger (and larger-than-life) specimen.
I knitted one set using a combination of the Wollmeise Lace held together with the Ito Tetsu yarn. Another set with the Wollmeise sock yarn.

Skills required:
knit, purl, ktbl, kfb, k2tog, k2tog tbl, yo, KLL & PLL increases, and traveling twisted stitches.
Step-by-step video tutorials are available for all techniques.

Additional materials:

  • wire or a stick (to support the mushroom)
  • toy stuffing
