This is an Overlay Mosaic Crochet Pattern

Some designs come from sketchbooks.
Others come from life.

The Coming Up Aces Potholders were inspired by something simple and familiar in our home — time spent around the table playing board games and card games together. Those evenings of laughter, friendly competition, and “just one more round” planted the seed for this design.

The original Coming Up Aces design was first created in 2022 as an interlocking crochet pattern. It can be found here. I loved the playful idea of the four card suits appearing in crochet so much that I decided to revisit the concept and translate it into one of my favourite techniques — overlay mosaic crochet.

The result is this bold and textured set of potholders featuring the four classic suits:

♠ Spades
♥ Hearts
♦ Diamonds
♣ Clubs

Worked in rows using overlay mosaic crochet, each potholder gradually reveals its suit motif as you crochet, turning simple stitches into striking graphic designs.

Whether you’re a fan of card games, mosaic crochet, or simply enjoy projects with a story behind them, this pattern was designed to be both fun to make and eye-catching in the kitchen.

Pattern Includes

• Instructions for four potholder designs
• Written row-by-row instructions
• Mosaic crochet charts
• Guidance for working the overlay mosaic crochet technique
• Instructions for finishing and adding hanging loops

Skill Level

Beginner / Intermediate

Confident beginners who are familiar with basic crochet stitches and interested in trying mosaic crochet should also be able to follow the pattern.

Notes

• Potholders are worked flat in rows.
• Only one colour is used per row.
• Strong colour contrast will highlight the mosaic design.

Sometimes the best designs are the ones that begin with a simple memory.

And in this case… a love of games around the table turned into a crochet pattern where you’ll always be Coming Up Aces. ♠️♥️♦️♣️
