This is an Overlay Mosaic Crochet Pattern

There is something special about taking a quiet moment with a favourite cup of tea. The Mosaic Tea Time Mug Rugs pattern was designed to capture that feeling, bringing a touch of warmth, comfort, and charm to your tea breaks.

This delightful set includes two coordinating mug rug designs. One features a traditional teapot, while the other showcases a steaming cup of tea, creating the perfect pair for tea lovers and cosy home décor. Whether placed beside your favourite armchair, used during afternoon tea with friends, or gifted to someone who appreciates life’s simple pleasures, these mug rugs add a welcoming handmade touch to any setting.

Worked using the overlay mosaic crochet technique, the designs are enjoyable to make and beautifully detailed. The pattern includes both written instructions and charts, allowing you to work from your preferred format.

Small enough for a relaxing weekend project yet striking enough to become a favourite conversation piece, these mug rugs are perfect for using treasured colour combinations, creating thoughtful gifts, or adding a little everyday luxury to your own tea ritual.

So put the kettle on, choose your favourite colours, and enjoy creating a charming pair of mug rugs inspired by the timeless comfort of tea time.

NOTE: The pattern does not teach you how to do mosaic crochet, but I included a resource page in the pattern file with links to all the tutorials that I found helpful.

The pattern file includes the option to use the negative stitch which is what I used in order to create a reversible project.

The file also includes the option to not use the technique i.e you will have the flaps on the back of your work as is normally the case with mosaic crochet.

This pattern uses the Chain Start Envelope Border method which eliminates the need for the slip stitch round prior to starting to the border.

Here are all the design details:

Project Size: (25 cm x 21 cm / 10 in x 8 in)

Yarn Used: Light DK (WPI 11) - 100% Cotton

Yarn Usage:
You will need about 220m in total PER mug rug

Col A - 95 m (104 yds)
Col B - 125 m (136 yds)

Hook Size: 3.0 mm for mosaic crochet and 2.5 mm for the border

Stitches Used: US Terminology - Chain, Single Crochet, Half Double Crochet (used in the border) and Double Crochet (Drop Down Dc)

Extra Materials Needed: scissors and stitchmarkers

Note that using a thicker yarn and larger hook will result in a bigger project. Similarly, using a thinner yarn and a smaller hook will result in a smaller project.

The Pattern Download Includes:

  • Written pattern with accompanying chart WITHOUT Negative Stitch for both Right-Handed and Left-Handed Crocheter - there will be flaps at the back of your work
