I was delighted to find another historical sontag pattern with a textured stitch. This one is unique in construction, as the outside border is worked at the same time as the sontag. The border of this pattern is given its proper shape, by working the increases in the center stitch. The pattern also utilizes intarsia knitting, for the border.

The original pattern does not specify if the border is the same color or not, so feel free to work it either way. That being said, intarsia knitting did exist, I have seen mention of it in other shawl patterns. It is an easy technique, all you do is twist the strands to secure the colors. There are photos below, if you are new to the technique.

Original pattern is from Peterson’s 1865.
