Originally dubbed the “Faux-Isle Hat,” the Mottles Hat pairs a solid with a variegated yarn to create the illusion of complicated colorwork. The stockinette-stitch hat, which is knitted in the round from the bottom up using a chevron colorwork chart, is finished with a colorful pom- pom at the crown. Thanks to the superwash-wool yarn, the hat washes easily.

Finished Size 17½“ brim circumference and 9” tall.

Yarn Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted (100% superwash merino wool; 225 yd / 4 oz): charcoal (gray; MC) and Lady Viola (multi; CC), 1 skein each.

Needles Size 7 (4.5 mm): 16” circular (cir) and set of dpn. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions Markers (m); tapestry needle.

Gauge 22 sts and 25 rnds = 4” in charted patt.

Notes

  • This hat is worked in the round from the bottom up.
