’Motylek’ meaning butterfly in polish language is a lightweight sweater perfect for any season.
The butterfly motif of the yoke is based on a colourwork knitted by men on Taquile Island on Titicaca lake. On this island men knit hats and women weave. It is fascinating to observe them knit as all the colourwork is done on the purlside and with no charts, apps or other modern age help. Quite astonishing given all the different motives these men incorporate into their work!

I have chosen to use Woolfolk Sno and Tynd yarn for this design. It is the most soft and beautiful merino. The sample shown uses Sno in Navy & Black (no 11) as a main colour, and Tynd in White (no 0) as a contrast colour.

The pattern comes in following sizes:
XS (S, S1, M) M1, L, L1; 32 (34, 36, 38) 41, 44, 48 inches; (shown in size S on a 34” bust)
Finished circumference at bust: 34.25 (36.5, 38.3, 40.5) 43.4, 46.3, 49.1 inches.

Yarn requirements:
MC approx: 5 (6, 6, 7) 7, 8, 8 skeins (Sno)
CC: 1(1, 1, 2) 2, 2, 2 skeins (Tynd)

Gauge:
28 sts and 40 rows to 4” (10cm) square in stockinette st knit in the round using size 3 (3.25 mm) needles after blocking.

This pullover is knitted bottom up and in the round in stockinette st. with stranded colour work borders on the hem, cuffs and on the yoke. Body and sleeves are knit separately to underarms, then all pieces are placed on 1 needle and the circular yoke is knit to the neckline. There are few short rows to raise the yoke at the back and to shape the neckline. It is recommended to swatch the colour work pattern, and if necessary to change the needle to keep the gauge correct.

The pattern is written and colourwork is charted.
If substituting yarn it is prudent to make a gauge swatch to avoid disappointment.

’Motylek’ can be worn with jeans and skirts alike.
Something to add to your wardrobe for year round use.
